Vitamin C serum: how and when to use it

What vitamin C does for your skin, when to apply it, how to combine it with other actives and why it always goes with sun protection.

In shortVitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect skin from free-radical damage and gives a more radiant, even look. It works best in the morning, on clean skin, always followed by sun protection.

What vitamin C does for your skin

Vitamin C is one of the most studied antioxidants in skincare. It helps neutralise the free radicals generated by sunlight and pollution, and plays a part in keeping skin firm. With consistent use, skin looks more radiant and tone more even.

In a serum it is often combined with other antioxidants, such as resveratrol or grape and pomegranate extracts, and with hyaluronic acid so the formula also hydrates.

Morning or night?

Morning. Its antioxidant role makes most sense during the day, when skin is exposed to sun and pollution. Apply it to clean skin, let it absorb and continue with your cream and sunscreen.

If your serum also contains hydrating actives, like ARUMA Serum, you can use it at night too.

How to apply it, step by step

  • Cleanse your face and pat dry.
  • Press 3-4 drops onto face, neck and décolleté.
  • Wait a few seconds for it to absorb.
  • Continue with eye contour and day cream.
  • Finish with sun protection.

What to combine it with, and what not

It works well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and sunscreen. If you use retinoids or acid exfoliants, it is easiest to keep those for the night and vitamin C for the morning, to reduce the risk of irritation.

Consistency over intensity

The results of an antioxidant show after weeks of daily use, not overnight. A short routine you keep every morning does more for your skin than many products used now and then.

Frequently asked questions

Does vitamin C irritate the skin?

Sensitive skin may feel a slight tingling at first. If persistent redness appears, use it less often and consult a professional.

Can I use vitamin C in summer?

Yes. It is a good ally in summer, always together with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

How long until I see results?

It depends on each skin, but radiance is usually assessed after several weeks of daily use.
